A sheep named Climb-to-the-sky, a duck, and a rooster drifted over Versailles for eight minutes. The rooster landed with a broken wing. This was considered reassuring. The brothers behind the experiment were Joseph-Michel and Jacques-Étienne Montgolfier — paper merchants who looked at floating embers and decided humans should do that too.
