The Diagnosis
What happens when a Soviet prison doctor has to diagnose the man who invented Russian absurdism?
Daniil Kharms walked the streets of Leningrad dressed as Sherlock Holmes. This was the late 1930s. Stalin's Great Terror was at full pitch, friends were vanishing in the night, and Kharms went out in a deerstalker, plus fours, spats, and a calabash pipe, sometimes with a butterfly net. He had co-founded the absurdist group OBERIU, whose official slogan, delivered with a straight face, was 'Art is a cupboard.' He had once recited his poems from on top of an actual wardrobe.
By day he wrote children's poems that Russian schoolchildren still memorize. In his diary he prayed, in rotation, for sex, money, and death.
In August 1941 he was arrested for saying the war was a fabrication. Facing execution, he did the only sensible thing and faked insanity. It worked. The prison psychiatrist examined him, took up his pen, and wrote, in dead earnest, that the patient's delusions 'are characterized by absurdities,' and that 'to keep his thoughts concealed he wraps his head in a headband or a small rag.'
The father of Russian absurdism had been clinically diagnosed with absurdism, by a doctor who appeared to have no idea he was writing a Kharms story.
Five months later he starved to death in the cell.
