The Rational Heat Motor
Why would a millionaire inventor lay out his nightshirt, mark a small cross on his diary, and fold his overcoat beneath the railing?
Rudolf Diesel called his invention the Rational Heat Motor. He had earned the name. He graduated Munich Polytechnic in 1880 with the highest marks then on record, patented the engine in 1893, and by 1897 had a prototype running at 26.2% efficiency, more than double the steam engines of the day. Adolphus Busch handed him a million dollars in cash for the American rights. At the 1900 Paris World's Fair he won the Grand Prix running the engine on peanut oil, because he believed every farmer should grow his own fuel.
On the night of 29 September 1913, he boarded the SS Dresden for London. He dined with two colleagues, smoked on deck, and at ten o'clock retired to his cabin. He asked the porter to wake him at 6:15 a.m.
In the morning the cabin was empty. His nightshirt was laid out on a bed he had not slept in. His watch sat where he could see it. His diary lay open to 29 September, with a single small cross drawn on the date. The man had even labelled the day.
On the afterdeck, beneath the railing, his hat and overcoat were folded.
