The man whose equations run every JPEG, MP3, and MRI scan came back from Egypt convinced heat was the secret to staying alive — and wore several overcoats indoors, in summer, until it killed him.
Joseph Fourier came back from Egypt cold.
Three years under the Sahara sun rewired something in him, and the man who would one day write the equations that govern every JPEG, MP3, and MRI scan returned to Paris convinced that heat was the secret of staying alive. He kept his rooms sweltering year-round. He wore several large overcoats indoors. His friend Arago later wrote that he dressed as even travelers condemned to winter among the polar ice did not.
This was in summer.
Baron Larrey, Napoleon's chief surgeon, who had amputated thousands of limbs on battlefields from Aboukir to Borodino and was therefore not easily alarmed, came to see him, took stock of the temperature and the coats, and told him the regime would kill him. Fourier declined to stop.
He had a joke he liked to tell. If his friends ever subjected him, like an Egyptian mummy, to the operation of unwrapping, they would find for residue only a rather slender body underneath. Whether he understood he was describing himself is one of those questions you don't really want answered.
On 4 May 1830 he fell on a staircase in his overheated house and died twelve days later.
They buried him at Pere Lachaise, in a tomb covered in Egyptian motifs.
