English in Heaven
In 1922, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle explained that Houdini's dead Jewish mother must have learned English in heaven.
Handcuffs. Straitjackets. Milk cans. The Chinese Water Torture Cell, feet locked in stocks, suspended upside-down in a glass tank, with stagehands offstage holding axes. He escaped everything.
He could not escape his mother.
Cecilia Weiss died in 1913. Houdini collapsed at the telegram, delayed her Jewish burial to see her one more time, and tucked into her casket a pair of woolen slippers she had asked him to buy in Europe. In letters to his brother he capitalized every pronoun for her. HER.
In June 1922, in Atlantic City, Lady Doyle offered to channel Cecilia through automatic writing. She produced fifteen pages. The first opened with a large cross. The messages were in fluent, sentimental English. Cecilia, wife of a Hungarian rabbi, had spoken only Yiddish, German, and Hungarian and could not read a word of English. This posed a problem for Sir Arthur, who solved it: she must have learned English in heaven.
Houdini's will instructed that a black bag of his mother's letters be placed inside his coffin, under his head, as a pillow.
He is still lying on it.

Egg Yolk, Rose Oil, Turpentine
One night in October 1537, a French army surgeon ran out of the boiling oil he was supposed to pour into gunshot wounds, and improvised a dressing of egg yolk, rose oil, and turpentine.

Sticks for the Spires
He was thrown out of a Trappist monastery with tuberculosis at thirty-five, and spent the next sixty years alone on a plot outside Madrid, building a cathedral with factory-reject bricks and pillars cast inside oil drums.

Up to His Neck
He walked into the North Sea at night until the water reached his neck, and sang psalms until dawn.
Wonder, delivered.
