The Cape Compromise
She swam thirteen miles down the Thames, twenty-two down the Danube, and got arrested walking onto a beach in Boston.
Annette Kellermann spent her childhood in steel leg braces. Her mother sent her to Cavill's Baths in Sydney to strengthen the legs, and by fifteen she had discarded the braces and started collecting distances instead. Thirteen miles down the Thames in under four hours. Twenty-two miles down the Danube against a baroness. Three cracks at the English Channel, one of them three-quarters of the way across.
Then she walked onto Revere Beach.
It was July 1907. Kellermann was wearing a form-fitting one-piece she had sewn herself, black stockings joined to a men's racing suit, and — the story she told for the rest of her life — a Boston officer arrested her for showing her legs. In court she asked the judge what the difference was between the legal bathing costumes and wearing lead chains around one's legs. He was, by every account, a reasonable man. He vacated the charge on one condition.
She had to wear a full-length cape from the boardwalk to the water.
Once her toes touched the Atlantic, she could take it off.
Within a decade, department stores were selling women's swimsuits under the generic name Annette Kellermans. The legs that were supposed to need braces had put her name on a piece of clothing.
She swam every day into her eighties. The braces never came back.
