The Dancer Who Toppled a King
What does a woman do after horsewhipping a Prussian gendarme, a Ballarat editor, and assembling a private army of law students?
Eliza Gilbert was born in County Sligo in 1821, the daughter of a British officer. By twenty-five she had divorced a lieutenant, reinvented herself as "Lola Montez, the Spanish dancer," danced before the Czar of Russia, and earned a warning from Alexandre Dumas that she was fatal to any man who dared to love her.
She did not like being told no.
In Berlin, when a gendarme tried to redirect her horse from the royal cordon during a military parade, she lashed him across the face with her riding whip, then went back to her hotel, ripped up the summons, and stamped on the pieces. In Ballarat, after the editor of the Ballarat Times panned her Spider Dance, she walked into the United States Hotel bar and horsewhipped him. He produced his own whip. She challenged him to a duel with pistols or poisoned pills.
In Munich, when sixty-year-old King Ludwig I gave her a palace, a 20,000-florin annuity, and the title of Countess of Landsfeld, she still found cause to organize a private army: a fraternity of law students called Alemannia who brawled with rival corps through the streets.
Munich rioted. Ludwig closed the university to break her students. The students did not break. She sneaked back into the city in disguise, and he let his own police search her. Three days later, on 20 March 1848, he abdicated.
He kept sending her money for seven years.
