The Guest of Honor
What does it take for a toll collector who painted tigers in his off-hours to end up enthroned on a packing crate at a banquet thrown by Picasso?
Henri Rousseau spent twenty-two years collecting tolls at the gates of Paris, checking cows and wine bottles for the city tax. He painted in his off-hours: flat, meticulous jungles full of tigers and lions he had studied at the botanical garden. One critic wrote that he painted with his feet, with a blindfold over his eyes.
In 1908, Picasso found one of his portraits in a junk shop, paid five francs for it, and threw him a banquet.
Thirty of the most important figures in modern art crowded into the Bateau-Lavoir. Apollinaire was there. Gertrude Stein was there. Braque played harmonica. André Salmon, drunk, ate Alice B. Toklas's hat. Rousseau was seated on a chair set atop a packing crate, like a small king, and played a waltz on his violin.
Above his head hung a paper Chinese lantern. Its candle began to drip.
Hot wax landed on his bald scalp throughout the meal. Rousseau beamed. He had decided it was a deliberate effect in his honor. What the other guests made of this is not recorded.
Eventually the lantern caught fire.
The hosts assured him this was the planned finale.
