The Man Who Let Gravity Draw
What kind of architect designs a church by hanging it upside down from a shed ceiling?
Antoni Gaudí graduated from architecture school in 1878 with a degree his own director called suitable for either a fool or a genius. He was, at the time, a young dandy in silk hats and kid gloves, who took a horse-drawn carriage to job sites and standing tickets at the opera, and ordered gourmet meals.
Then he decided to build a church by hanging one from the ceiling of a shed.
The method, which he refined for a decade, was this: strings tied to a frame, weighted with hundreds of tiny canvas bags of lead birdshot, each pellet scaled to the mass of the stone it stood for. Gravity pulled the strings into perfect catenary curves. Gaudí photographed the drooping mess, turned the photo upside down, and there was his church. This is how the Church of Colònia Güell was designed. Not on paper. Not in ink. In lead and sag.
Other architects were drawing straight lines for God. He was letting God's own physics do the drafting, one shot pellet at a time.
By the time tram #30 struck him in 1926, the silk hats were long gone. His pockets held a rosary, a Gospel, some hazelnuts, and one key. The taxis, seeing the rags, refused him.
He had spent a lifetime trusting what falls.
