What kind of woman test-drives a Niagara Falls barrel by sending a cat over first?
Annie Edson Taylor was a sixty-three-year-old widowed charm-school teacher from Bay City, Michigan, running out of money and options. So she decided to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel.
Not metaphorically. Literally. She commissioned one from a local cooper: white Kentucky oak, seven iron hoops, four and a half feet tall, padded inside with a mattress and a small heart-shaped pillow for her head. A leather harness held her upright. A bicycle pump pressurized the air. A two-hundred-pound anvil sat at the bottom to keep her feet down.
She wanted to be sure it would hold.
So on October 18, 1901, she put a domestic cat in the barrel and sent it over Horseshoe Falls. The cat survived with a gash on its head. What one does with this information, aside from what Annie did, is difficult to say. The cat was named Niagara. It later posed with Annie for photographs, both of them looking mildly inconvenienced.
Six days later, on her sixty-third birthday, she climbed in herself and went over. She emerged with a small cut on her scalp and one comment for the assembled press.
"Nobody ought ever do that again."
Niagara, presumably, agreed.
