The Servant of Jesus
In 1602 the Jesuits sent a former soldier to walk from India to China in disguise to settle a geography argument β what could possibly go wrong?
Bento de Goes left Agra in October 1602 to settle an argument. European geographers still believed Marco Polo's Cathay and Matteo Ricci's China were two different countries. The Jesuits in Goa picked a Portuguese lay brother, formerly a dissolute soldier, to walk the four thousand miles between them and find out.
He grew a long beard, put on a robe and turban, and travelled as Abdullah Isai, an Armenian Christian merchant. The name means Servant of Jesus. He carried it across the Hindu Kush and the Pamirs into Yarkand, where he spent a year buying a jade boulder large enough to fund the next caravan. He carried it into Cialis, where the king offered him prison or Islam and he answered that he had made the journey this far bearing the name of Christian, and so should he end it. He carried it through Jiayuguan Pass into Suzhou on Christmas Day 1605, with thirteen horses, two boys redeemed from slavery, and the jade.
There the Ming halted him. He waited eighteen months for word to reach Ricci in Beijing. A Chinese Jesuit, Giovanni Fernandes, walked two months through winter to find him, and arrived to find him dying. Bento lasted eleven days.
His travel diary recorded the debts his Muslim caravan companions owed him. They fell on it with open jaws and tore it to pieces before the body was cold.

What does a 59-year-old Baptist preacher do when a face appears in a smudge of paint on his fingertip and tells him to start painting?

Peace
He fed three thousand people in an afternoon, banned the word "hello" because it contained "hell," and quietly let his followers know he was God.

What kind of master criminal steals a Gainsborough, then sleeps on top of her for twenty-five years?
