In 1926 a twenty-year-old swam the English Channel faster than any man alive — and her trainer spent the worst hour of it begging her to quit.
By twenty, Gertrude Ederle held twenty-nine world records, three Olympic medals, and the distinction of having swum the twenty-two miles from Manhattan to Sandy Hook faster than anyone before her. She did not enjoy being told to stop.
On the morning of August 6th, 1926, she greased herself with lanolin and lard, fixed motor goggles sealed with candle wax over her eyes, and waded into the Channel at Cap Gris-Nez. Her trainer followed in a tugboat with her father, her sister Margaret, and a few reporters.
When she got hungry, they lowered chicken legs to her on a long pole. Trudy ate treading water and kept going. From the tug, they sang to her. Around hour twelve a squall came up and the sea turned ugly enough that her trainer leaned over the rail and shouted that she must come out at once.
Trudy looked up from the water. "What for?" she said, and put her face back down.
She finished in fourteen hours and thirty-one minutes, nearly two hours faster than any man who had ever done it. The cold pushed her hearing past saving; she would be nearly deaf for the rest of her life. The English coast was dark and full of bonfires lit in her honor.
The first person to reach her on the beach was a British immigration officer, who asked to see her passport.
