What does a man who insists he was sent here from Saturn do when NASA rejects his application?
Sun Ra led the Arkestra in cosmic robes and ankhs for forty-seven years, recorded over a hundred albums, pioneered the synthesizer in jazz, and is now considered a founding figure of Afrofuturism. He also maintained, calmly and consistently, that he was from Saturn.
He had been sent, he said, because the world was heading into chaos.
In the spring of 1971, the University of California at Berkeley let him teach a course. It was called "The Black Man in the Cosmos." The reading list included Madame Blavatsky, the Egyptian Book of the Dead, Ouspensky, and the Book of Oahspe. It also included the King James Bible, listed on the syllabus as "The Source Book of Man's Life and Death," by "God." When students complained that the books were impossible to find, Sun Ra, per his biographer, merely smiled knowingly. Arkestra members circulated through the room to stop anyone recording the lectures.
A few years later, he applied to NASA's art program, hoping to put his music on the Voyager Golden Record. Carl Sagan's committee passed. What Sun Ra made of this is the only sane reaction available to a man in his position.
"The outer space beings are my brothers," he said. "They sent me here. So they already know my music."
