What does a 59-year-old Baptist preacher do when a face appears in a smudge of paint on his fingertip and tells him to start painting?
Howard Finster was fifty-nine years old and had never held a paintbrush. He was a retired Baptist preacher in Pennville, Georgia, a man of twenty-two trades, fixing a bicycle in his shop one afternoon in January 1976. He rubbed a smudge of white enamel onto a patch with his fingertip. He looked at the fingertip. A human face was looking back.
A warm feeling came over his body. A voice said, Paint sacred art.
He traced George Washington off a dollar bill for practice. Then God told him to make five thousand paintings, so he did, finishing a few days before Christmas 1985. The reasonable thing, at that point, would have been to stop.
He did not stop. He numbered each one in tractor enamel on plywood, slept twenty minutes at a time in his clothes, and kept the count climbing through the Talking Heads cover and Johnny Carson and the Venice Biennale. Reasonable is not a word that survived contact with Howard Finster. He kept numbering for the next sixteen years, through congestive heart failure, into Rome, Georgia.
The final painting was numbered 46,991.
God had asked for five thousand.
